Weave a willow climbing plant support

Would you like to upgrade the bamboo cane and string plant supports in your kitchen garden? Perhaps you're looking for something more substantial to display a climbing rose or clematis?

I can teach you the skills to make your own climbing plant supports from natural materials. With my step-by-step instructions you will learn how to make a strong structure that will also be a beautiful, sculptural focal point in your garden.

Using renewable coppiced willow, your plant support will be environmentally friendly and sustainable. With the techniques I demonstrate, you will be able to construct whatever supports you need, in a variety of sizes, whenever you need them. You'll never need to buy a plant support again!

class format

This is an online class that you can follow from your own home (or garden!). It comprises seven video lessons totalling about 40 minutes plus handouts on what materials and tools you need and where to get hold of them, how to make a jig to hold your uprights together whilst you weave on them and how to care for your plant support.

You can pause, rewind and replay the videos as much as you want.

You also get access to a private Facebook discussion group where you can show off your creations to other students and ask me for advice. You can also email me anytime if you are stuck.

materials

You have several options regarding materials for the project:

Option 1 - you can buy materials locally to you. You'll need 3/4 ft and 6ft willow for weaving plus 12 stout sticks for the uprights. In my course I've included a downloadable PDF listing the suppliers in England that I generally use. Note that, if you buy your own materials, they will need soaking before use.

Option 2 - you might be able to harvest suitable materials from your garden. You'd really need to harvest them in the Spring.

Option 3 - you can buy a complete kit of materials from me including weavers and uprights. These will be soaked and ready to use. There may be a delay of up to 10 days after you order to allow me time to soak the material for you. The weaving material will be willow. The uprights may be willow or hazel depending on availability.

If you buy a kit from me you can either collect it from my studio in Farnham, Surrey or, if you live in Farnham, I can deliver it for free. OR I can post to a UK mainland address for an additional cost. Please note that I can't post kits outside the UK.

    time needed

I would expect it to take you around 3 hours to make one plant support depending on the size. Once you've bought the online class you will have access to it until the end of August 2020. You can watch it as many times as you like and, by sourcing your own materials, you can make as many plant supports as you need.

If you buy my kit of pre-soaked materials you will need to use them within 4-5 days of receiving them. If you leave it longer than that the willow will dry out and will break when you try to weave with it. Keep the materials outside in a cool shady spot until you're ready to use them.

I'll have a limited number of kits available each week. If you have a particular day in mind that you want to work on the project, let me know by adding a note to your order at check-out.

    tools needed

    secateurs

cable tie or string ( a cable tie is provided if you buy my kit)

either spare timber and woodworking tools to make a wooden jig

OR a large cardboard box, compass (or you could draw around a plate or tray), scissors or screwdriver to make a cardboard jig (if you are local and buy my kit of materials I may be able to lend you a jig)

buying this class as a gift

This class would make a great gift for a keen gardener. The lucky recipient would have all the fun and satisfaction of learning a new craft plus they would have a beautiful and useful item for their garden - two presents in one! I can either post the kit straight to the recipient or you can pick up the kit from me and gift it personally. If you or the recipient are in Farnham, I can deliver the kit for free. IMPORTANT: If you want to buy this class as a gift please purchase the gift version. This is because when you purchase the class here, a log-in is automatically created in your name in my online school. The gift version gives you the chance to tell me the recipient's details.
